Notes:

See a complete Young family history in the book ,"ROBERT YOUNG, SR. PATRIOT AND PIONEER", by Fred and Dessie Simmons, 1984.
Earliest research available on ROBERT and MARY YOUNG is that they were adults in 1740, and owned land on the Forks of the James River, Augusta Co., VA. The fact that they lived in a Scotch-Irish and Presbyterian settlement in Virginia points to Scotch-Irish (Ulster Scotch) heritage.
While living on Buffalo Creek, in the Forks of the James River, they reared their 13 children. ROBERT and MARY moved to what is now Tennessee between 1770-1772. All of their children (with spouses) moved to this area and settled on land near their parents. ROBERT YOUNG received a land grant from King George II on James River. Land settled in Tennessee was Indian land, the Watauga Purchase of 1775/1776 made legal title of land to YOUNG on Brush Creek. He was associated with the formation of the State of Franklin, and a Revolutionary War veteran/hero of the Battle of King's Mtn. *Many early historians credit ROBERT YOUNG, Sr. as having been the one who shot British Colonel Patrick Ferguson at the Battle of Kings Mt . ROBERT YOUNG, Sr. died and is buried in the ROBERT YOUNG Sr. Family Cemeteery on the Veterans Hospital/East TN State University grounds, Johnson City, TN. This is land which once belonged to him, and on which his cabin was located. His cabin is now located in Winged Deer Park, Johnson City., TN. His rifle, "Sweetlips", is in the Tennessee State Museum, Nashville, TN.

  3. MARY 'POLLY' MCKINNEY, b. abt. 1852, d. 20 April 1932

Notes:

Information derived from 1850 NC Census regarding children raises questions as to correct date of birth. The name McKinney had its beginning in the highlands of Scotland .McKINNEY is a sept of the Scottish Highland Clan MACKINNON of Isle of Skye. JOHN's father is belived to be JOHN MCKINNEY, Sr. the son of WILLIAM and MARY MCKINNEY of Burke , Yancey and now Mitchell Co., N.C. Both JOHN Sr. and JOHN Jr. are in the 1840 Carter Co. Tn. U.S. Census. JOHN JR. appears back in Yancey Co., NC, in the 1850 Census. Marriage record of JOHN and MARY MCKINNEY is recorded in the Burke Co., N.C. Marriage Bonds. Bondsmen and witnesses were SAMUEL MCKINNEY and SIMON STREET. The 1850 N.C. U.S. Census, (Yancey Co.) lists JOHN age 50, JOHN W. age 7 , MARY age 45 and JUDITH ANN age1. JOHN's birth place is listed as South Carolina. Mary's is listed as North Carolina. JOHN W. is listed as having been born in N.C. JOHN is listed as being a farmer , in household #742 The location of their home in the census seems to be in the Glen Aire area. The 1860 Yancey Co. Census lists Elizabeth Street living in the household with JOHN and MARY MCKINNEY. The 1880 Mitchell Co., N.C. Census lists three grandchildren in the household. Their names are LYDIA age 2, LEONARD age 2, and JAMES age 5. In all census reports(other than 1850) JOHN is listed as being born in N.C., rather than S.C. Also, JOHN WESLEY gives his birthplace as Carter Co. TN., rather than N.C. Note: The area of Bakersville, N.C. was a part of Burke, and Yancey Co.s before becoming Mitchell Co. The WA. Co., TN Death Record of daughter, JUDITH MCKINNEY, gives JOHN and MARY as her parents.
