WILLIAM M. SLAGLE served in Company I , of the 29th Regiment, North Carolina Confederate Army during the Civil War. The company was raised in Mitchell Co, on July 11, 1861. His age was listed as 21 years old. According to the 1860 Yancy Co., NC Censue, WILLIAM and NANCY J. GARLAND SLAGLE lived in the Red Hill area of the county on Sweet Creek-Pumpkin Patch Mt. His death record (Mithcell Co., NC) states he died of rheumatism at age 81. He was buried in the SLAGLE Cemetery on John Canipe Rd. in Mitchell Co., NC. , just off the Cub Creek Road and Sweet Creek(Slagle Branch) Road. Grave marker gives middle inital as M, other records show J. The death record has only William Slagle, and gives date of death as April 12, 1921. The death record, also, lists his parents as JACOB & NANCY BURLESON SLAGLE. War record lists him only as William Salgle. The log house which was the home of WM. and NANCY SLAGLE is still occupied. It is located on the upper end of of the John Canipe Rd.

He was the first Magistrate of Carter Co., TN, 1796. And was commissionrd by John Sevier as a Juscie of the Peace on April 23rd 1796. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, serving in the NC Militia. His grave is in the Garland Cemetery , Red Hill, N.C., and has has been honored by the N.C. Chapter of the D.A.R.
On records found in North Carolina, GUTRIDGE is always given the title Esquire.

The 1850 Yancey Co.,NC states her age as 22 yrs old and born in TN. In the 1860 Yancey Co.
